Discover the Maitland Art Center – A Florida Treasure
A Unique Artist Colony in Maitland, FL
Located at 231 W Packwood Avenue, Maitland, FL 32751, the Maitland Art Center is an extraordinary example of Mayan Revival Art Deco architecture. Built in 1937 as The Research Studio, it was designed by artist-architect J. André Smith and funded by patron Mary Curtis Bok. Smith envisioned it as a place for artists to explore and experiment.
A Rich Legacy of Creativity
The center served as an artist colony in the 1930s and ’40s, welcoming prominent artists like Milton Avery, Ralston Crawford, and Consuelo Kanaga. After Smith’s death in 1959, the site continued as an arts hub and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2014, the only one of its kind in Central Florida.
